The first phase of the Nuragic civilisation can be made to coincide with the Middle Bronze Age (1800-1400 B.C.), and is mainly characterised by the building of protonuraghi.

According to archaeologist Paolo Melis, these are

“… buildings that differ significantly from the classical nuraghi: with a more squat appearance and a generally irregular plan, their interiors do not contain the large circular chamber typical of the nuraghe, but one or more corridors and a few rare false-vaulted cells”.

Attached protonuraghi: Bruncu Maduli or Bruncu Madugui di Gesturi (ph. Marco Cocco and Andrea Mura-Nuragando Sardegna); Seneghe di Suni (ph. Gianni Sirigu); Tusari di Silanus (ph. Nuraviganne)
