UNESCO RECOGNITION FOR DOMUS DE JANAS MARKS A TURNING POINT. ANCIENT SARDINIAN CIVILISATION ENORMOUS WEALTH TO CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON

Sardinia towards Unesco’ welcomes with great enthusiasm the recognition of the Domus de Janas as a World Heritage Site.

‘With this important recognition,’ explains Pierpaolo Vargiu, President of the ‘Sardinia towards Unesco’ Association, ‘our ancient history, so extraordinarily present and alive in the Domus de Janas, the sacred wells, the tombs of the giants and the thousands of nuragic towers that are the symbol of our island, today takes a very important step forward. Thanks to Unesco, it is even more evident that the ancient Sardinian civilisation is an immense wealth that deserves to be told everywhere, to become Sardinia’s identity card in the world. Now on with the Nuraghi in Unesco,’ Vargiu concluded.

For Sardinia towards Unesco – created in 2020 with the aim of bringing the monuments of the Nuragic civilisation onto the UNESCO World Heritage List – the preservation, protection and enhancement of the ancient Sardinian civilisation and its monuments are the basis of a new idea of growth for the territory.

In this sense, the grandiose result obtained in Paris by the Domus de Janas represents, in the Association’s view, yet another confirmation of the universal value of Sardinian prehistory and protohistory and of the extraordinary importance that our identity landscape, unique in the world for the wealth of thousands of monuments scattered throughout Sardinia’s 377 municipalities, can play in turning Sardinia’s economic development around.
