The tomb of the giants of Su Monte ‘e S’Abe is a typical funerary monument from the Nuragic period. It is one of the largest collective tombs in Sardinia.
It is composed of a burial corridor, covered with horizontal slabs (piattabanda) and a semicircular front space (exedra), reserved for the burial rituals and delimited by large slabs (orthostats) driven into the ground.
In the centre of the exedra stood the stele, now missing except for a fragment still embedded in the ground on the left side. The corridor is covered externally by an imposing mound of stones and earth. The monument was probably built in two phases. The corridor would date back to the Early Bronze Age (19th-17th century B.C.) while the addition of the exedra and the transformation into a giants’ tomb would date back to the Middle Bronze Age (17th-14th century B.C.). The tomb was archaeologically excavated in 1968.
To reach the site, take the SP24 in the direction of Loiri. At the end of the straight stretch following the Loddone bridge, turn right into Via Castello Pedrese. After about 2 km (first on asphalt and then on a dirt road) you reach the car park for the Pedres Castle. From here, a path branches off and leads shortly to the tomb.
