The megalithic burial site of Pranu Siara in Suelli

At Suelli, the passion for the study of Nuragic and pre-Nuragic history has never gone out of fashion. The municipal administration, as part of its project for the protection and enhancement of archaeological sites, has planned a new excavation campaign on the Pranu Siara nuragic area. The work, coordinated by the Cagliari Archaeological Superintendency, will start on Monday 4 March with an in-depth investigation on the hypogeum tomb, a few hundred metres from the centre, where important archaeological finds have already been discovered in the recent past.

Not too long ago, the municipality purchased the land on which the important archaeological site is located. It is a 4000-metre plot of land classified as agricultural land on which, since 1983, there has been a protection order from the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage. The ‘Local Tourist System’ project set up by the city administration to make the finds discovered in the area usable, and if possible to discover more, continues without a hitch.

The aim is to enhance the identity of the places: starting from the Neolithic period with the Pranu Siara necropolis, passing through an evocative excursus into the first century of the year 1000 when Suelli became the seat of the diocese with San Giorgio Vescovo di Suelli, and retained that title for 500 years.
