‘Nuragic Sardinia’, Monday 27th the first event in Barumini

Born from the will of the ‘Sardinia towards Unesco’ Association to network by exploring the most advanced and innovative technologies in order to achieve a real valorisation of the Sardinian nuragic heritage, the ‘Sardegna Nuragica’ project coordinated by CRENoS, which will be presented on Monday 27 January at the first of three participatory events in Barumini.

“The project is the result of the synergy and the constant and continuous work of several subjects, all involved in various ways by the Association,” explains Pierpaolo Vargiu, President of ‘Sardinia towards UNESCO. “Thanks to the support of the Region, which has recognised in the initiative a turning point for the enhancement of the Sardinian nuragic heritage, we are now in a position to lay the foundations for a new narrative of our history, capable of better conveying the knowledge of ancient Sardinian civilisation but also of supporting that path of economic growth and sustainable development that, starting precisely from the nuraghi, can bring wealth and well-being to Sardinia and Sardinians’.

Several partners are involved. In addition to the promoting association ‘Sardinia towards Unesco’, the project partnership coordinated by CRENoS (Centre for North-South Economic Research of the Universities of Cagliari and Sassari), CRP – Regional Programming Centre of the Region of Sardinia, CRS4 – Centre for Research, Development and Advanced Studies in Sardinia, and GLab of the University of Cagliari are part of the project partnership. The project also benefits from the archaeological expertise of the Department of Humanities, Languages and Cultural Heritage of the University of Cagliari and the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Sassari.

The initiative aims at transforming the 32 sites of the Nuragic civilisation included in the Unesco tentative list, and thus candidates for World Heritage status, into an integrated system capable of uniting tourism, training, entrepreneurship and research. Through a participative approach involving the island’s 377 municipalities, ‘Sardegna Nuragica’ intends to create a network of cultural offerings capable of protecting and enhancing the nuragic monuments, improving their accessibility and promoting economic development. A network that develops and provides tangible and intangible services for the benefit of its members. The aim is to make nuragic monuments more accessible, usable and attractive through ICT digital platforms and tools, without compromising their historical and cultural integrity. The planned technology platform will be a meeting point for visitors, scholars and practitioners.

The first public meeting on Monday 27 January (9.30 a.m. – 1.00 p.m., Barumini, Centro Servizi Lilliu) addressed to the sites and territories of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, South Sardinia, Sulcis Iglesiente and Medio Campidano) will be followed by those of Torralba (4 February 2025, 9.30 a.m. – 1 p.m., Valle dei Nuraghi Museum) addressed to the sites and territories of North Sardinia, Sassarese and Gallura, and in Abbasanta (14 February 2025, 9.30 a.m. – 1 p.m., Centro Servizi Losa) addressed to the sites and territories of Oristanese, Nuorese and Ogliastra.
The final event to present the results of the pathway, including guidelines for the management of the heritage and strategies for its enhancement, is scheduled for December 2025 in Barumini.
