The Lunamatrona territory has much to tell. In particular, its immediate periphery presents important archaeological evidence, dating back to the Bronze Age, with finds dating back even to the earlier culture of Monte Claro https://www.nurnet.net/blog/monte-claro/. A culture to which the ceramics found at the protonuraghe Trobas date back: a monument that stands on a relief flanking the prehistoric road to Villanovaforru and features a vast basement and four adjacent rooms. Near the Trobas, one can admire the tomb of giants called ‘su Cuaddu ‘e Nixias’.
The Sardegna Turismo website states that this burial is ‘the oldest (1700-1600 BC) in Sardinia. The name (‘the horse of Nixias’) is due to the presence of a hole at the top of the stele that, according to legend, was used to tie horses. The burial chamber, ten metres long, is a sunken corridor bordered by stone slabs. At the bottom of the chamber is an enclosed quadrangular chest raised above the corridor. The entrance opens at the base of a sandstone stele currently almost three metres high. On both sides vertical slabs of decreasing height towards the outside form the exedra. The space in front of the entrance was dedicated to rituals in honour of the dead’.
Adjacent to the western front of the settlement, on a modest relief (205 metres above sea level) stands the four-lobed nuraghe Pitzu Cummu, built in basalt stone and surrounded by what remains of a village. There is also an interesting well-cistern on the site.
The photos of the Pitzu Cummu nuraghe are by: Diversamente Sardi, Andrea Mura- Nuragando Sardegna, Romano Stangherlin and Pasquale Pintori. Those of the Su Cuaddu ‘e Nixias tomb of giants are by: Romano Stangherlin and Francesca Cossu. The well of the Trobas nuraghe is portrayed by Franco Vacca.
