Lu Brandali archaeological complex in Santa Teresa di Gallura

The nuragic complex of Lu Brandali in Santa Teresa Gallura rises along the slopes of a granite promontory and the surrounding plain. It comprises a nuraghe, a village, a giants’ tomb, several tafoni and rock shelters.

The nuraghe exploits the rocky planes, developing on several levels. The central donjon is surrounded by an antemurale of which two towers and a curtain wall with monumental access are legible. Of the village, 36 curvilinear huts with wall facings and wooden roofs have been identified. Between the area of the huts and the nuraghe are some 20 tafoni with a dwelling and funerary function. Downstream is the Tomb of the Giants, consisting of an elongated main body with an apsidal termination and a semicircular exedra with row masonry.

The site has yielded conspicuous remains of marine fauna, which testify to the practice of fishing. In fact, the remains of several species of fish have been identified: the black wrasse, the whistling wrasse, the moray eel, the gilthead bream, the dentex and a specimen of scombrid (Thunnus or related genus). Although its species could not be identified, it can be said to be a small tuna.

From Olbia, Isola Bianca harbour area, follow the SS 125 to Arzachena as far as the junction for Palau; at the crossroads, turn left onto the SS 133, which leads directly onto the SS 133 bis to Santa Teresa Gallura. Without entering the town, turn left onto the road for the Bay of Santa Reparata, where the nuragic complex is located.
