The ancient Sardinian civilisation seen under the lens of the new challenges related to artificial intelligence. The conversation entitled ‘Artificial Intelligence, Cultural and Archaeological Heritage: Recent Developments and Perspectives’ was held yesterday in the hall of the former Manifattura Tabacchi, the third event in the series of popular conferences promoted by ‘Sardinia towards UNESCO’.
Leading the audience on a fascinating journey through the extraordinary opportunities that AI offers to the studies and research of our archaeologists were Professors Ivan Blecic, Director of Dicaar UniCA, and Andrea Trunfio, Professor of Information Processing Systems UniSS. The evening was opened by Roberto Silvano, a member of the Association and for the occasion the ‘guide’ of the evening, who introduced the topic with an actual simulation aimed at revealing how artificial intelligence – in this case Chatgpt, a conversational artificial intelligence model developed by OpenAI – can contribute with relevant content to framing specific topics (Chatgpt, answering direct questions, gave a presentation of the meeting, of the work that the Association carries out and of the importance of the valorisation of the Nuragic heritage).
The two lecturers Blecic and Trunfio framed the topic. The lecturer in Information Processing Systems at the University of Sassari, specifically, offered the audience a historical excursus that depicted, step by step, the expansion of AI up to the present day, with a specific focus on how AI is transforming archaeology, and thus on the value of AI for archaeology and cultural heritage.
The International Conference organised by the Association on 29 November entitled ‘Nuragic civilisation and Artificial Intelligence: from stones to neural networks’ will be dedicated to the topic of Artificial Intelligence. Professor Blecic will introduce the topic by presenting with Massimo Deriu the EIA Project, Ecosystems Technological Innovation, of “Sardinia towards UNESCO”.
