25c: Nuraghe Sisini of Senorbì and Giant’s Tombs Muttas Nieddas of Gesico

25c: The nuraghe Sisini stands on top of a small hill in the countryside at the entrance of the homonymous district of Senorbì. It is characterized by an original and uncommon plan, which follows the model of well temples like those of Is Pirois in Villaputzu and Funtana Coberta in Ballao. The monument consists of a circular base tower preceded by a massive trapezoidal bastion.

About two kilometers from the town of Gesico, on the dirt road leading to Villanovafranca, on a steep rise, there are the remains of the four giant tombs called “Muttas Nieddas,” which are only about ten meters apart from each other. Their main features are the complete absence of an exedra and their resemblance to an upside-down ship’s hull, reminiscent of the burial monuments called “navetas,” typical of the Talayotic civilization of Menorca and the Balearic Islands.

The photos of the nuraghe Sisini, in the homonymous district of Senorbì, are by Bibi Pinna, Sergio Melis, Nicola Castangia, and Francesca Cossu. Those of the Giant Tombs Muttas Nieddas, in Gesico, are by Francesca Cossu.
