11b: The Corbeddu and Sa Ohe caves – Oliena

11b: The Corbeddu cave, located in Oliena, is about 130 meters long and is essentially composed of three “halls.” Important archaeological finds have been made inside, particularly some human remains dated to about 20,000 years ago, which constitute the oldest evidence of Homo sapiens in Sardinia. In this cave sought refuge the famous Sardinian bandit Giovanni Corbeddu, from whom it gets its name.
The Sa Ohe cave (the mouth) communicates through submerged passages with the nearby Su Bentu cave. Incorrectly known as Sa Oche, mistakenly translated as “the voice,” it has been known and frequented since ancient times.
The photos of the Corbeddu cave in the territory of Oliena are by Nicola Castangia, Bruno Sini, and Marco Cocco. Those of the Sa Ohe cave, also in the territory of Oliena, are by Bibi Pinna and Natalino Piras.
