33a.2 and 38.2: Nuraghe Pattada ‘e Chelvos, in Illorai, and Nuraghe Erismanzanu in Esporlatu

33a.2 and 38.2: The Nuraghe Pattada ‘e Chelvos is located about 7 km North-East of Illorai. It is a single tower, fairly well preserved, made of roughly hewn trachyte blocks. The entrance, topped by a beautiful lintel about 2 m long, leads to a corridor approximately 4 m long, covered by slabs. From the corridor, one accesses the now vaulted circular chamber, which features three niches.

The nuraghe Erismanzanu, in Esporlatu, made of trachyte, has a corridor with a spiral staircase on the left and a guardroom on the right, and a perfectly preserved vaulted chamber with three niches arranged in a cross. The doorposts of the entrance to the nuraghe are 1.52 m and 1.24 m high, respectively. The tower has a maximum height of 8 m and consists of seventeen rows of stones. The entrance is located to the East, its perfectly worked lintel is 1.60 m long, 0.70 m high, and 0.80 m wide. The holm oak, born and grown on its summit, has created a sort of “hanging garden,” certainly fascinating but which raises reasonable concerns about the stability of the monument.

The photos of the nuraghe Pattada ‘e Chelvos, in Illorai, are by Marco Cocco; while those of the nuraghe Erismanzanu, in Esporlatu, are by Lucia Corda, Maurizio Cossu, Giovanni Sotgiu, and Francesca Cossu.
